Should the patient’s request be documented in the medical record? Why or why not?
A Medical Office Manager (MOM) is setting up home health care services for a 78-year-old man who was recently diagnosed with diabetes. The home health care is needed to provide the man with education about his condition, as well as assess his self-care abilities.
While discussing the services to be provided, the man informs the MOM that he only wants white people to come to his home. He further states, “I just don’t trust those black people and I certainly don’t want them walking around freely in my home. Put that down in writing”.
The MOM is shocked by the man’s request and is not sure how to proceed.
It is a racist request but yes it should be put in the report. As to weather it will be honored is another question. Not honoring the request could cause much stress for the patient since he feels so strongly about it. The MOM and the patient really need to discuss this matter and weather his request can be honored.
