dark ring neck diabetes
Difference between dirty neck and diabetes?

I’m wondering if you have that dark ring around your neck and if you have diabetes – can you wash it off, or is it like a scar and stays on forever?
Or is it just as if you have a really dirty neck and you can just wash it off? What is the difference and how can you tell if you have a dirty neck or you have diabetes?

There is a lot of information on this “dirty neck” (acanthosis nigricans) . It is dark velvety skin patches usually around back of neck, between fingers and toes, or skin folds and groin areas. Can mean type 2 in a adolescent teenage if they are overweight. Usually reversible if the primary reason for the skin disorder is treated. This can also be caused by OTHER endocrine diseases. Again this is only a sign of something underlying. It is reversible with treatment, but not “washable”. If you have a dirty neck, wash it, and the dirt comes off. If the dirt doesn’t come off, then you will want to see the doctor. ONLY a doctor can tell you WHAT is the cause. Tests need to be done.
